Well, our first game is tomorrow. In practice last night I instituted a new defensive scheme: it’s called, “Play Defense or Else!” The kids really seemed to take to it. In reality, I’m going to have them go with full court man-to-man defense after every made shot or stoppage in play and normal man-to-man (inside the three-point line) for all missed shots. They lost all their games last year; I see room only for improvement. And, worst case scenario, we can’t do as poorly as our JV team: they lost 112 to 18 on Monday.

I have a feelin' your boys will foul a lot shortly after they discover playing defense is thankless work with little star recognition. Actually, it may work in your favor. Most refs at the jr. high level equate pay and length of game as one and the same. It all could go well unless you have a ref that does need to get home early...

Make that DOES NOT need to get home early...

Yeah, I have two kids who will foul out before the end of the first quarter. And most of them just can't keep their hands off.

Your girl cousin plays good defense and she just holds out her number so the ref can see it when she fouls

I only have two "girl cousins", and none of them play basketball. Do they?
